As the Philippines joined the global observance of International Women’s Day, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the government's commitment to upholding women's rights and ensuring their continued progress in society.
In a message posted on social media, Marcos highlighted the crucial role of women in nation-building, describing them as an “unshakeable force that nurtures, perseveres, and redefines.” He vowed that his administration would remain steadfast in advocating for women’s rights and opposing any barriers to their advancement.
“The Bagong Pilipinas we are building will always advocate for women’s rights and vigorously oppose anything threatening their progress,” the President declared. “Let us commit to supporting them in their endeavors to uplift the nation and the rest of the world.”
Marcos also emphasized the importance of celebrating the achievements of Filipinas across generations, from the babaylans and Katipuneras of the past to the professional trailblazers, frontliners, and leaders of today. He underscored that recounting their stories would serve as inspiration for young girls to leave their mark on society.
International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, is recognized by the United Nations as a day to honor women’s contributions and to advocate for gender equality. The 2025 theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” reflects the global push for inclusivity and progress. In the Philippines, National Women’s Month is celebrated throughout March as a platform to recognize women's achievements and address issues concerning gender equality.
According to the 2020 census, women comprise 49.4% of the Philippine population, totaling 53.65 million. Their contributions to various sectors, including governance, healthcare, education, and business, continue to shape the country’s development.
Marcos acknowledged the resilience and strength of Filipinas, likening them to the dynamic and ever-evolving spirit of the nation. “Many of the developments we witness today can be attributed to the innumerable contributions of women across generations who fought, struggled, and advocated for various noble causes,” he said.
The President concluded his message by honoring the millions of empowered Filipinas who have dedicated their knowledge, talents, and even their lives for the betterment of society. His statement reaffirmed the government’s pledge to foster an inclusive and equitable society where women can thrive and lead in shaping the country’s future.
