Thousands of Amazon workers, including many Filipinos, joined a strike led by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Union, citing unfair labor practices and the company’s refusal to negotiate a labor contract.
The Teamsters Union reported that nearly 10,000 Amazon employees participated, demanding higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions. The strike has disrupted operations at hundreds of fulfillment centers nationwide.
New York Consul General Senen Mangalile expressed support for the workers’ rights, urging all parties to engage in dialogue. “We recognize the right of all workers, including Filipino nationals, to organize, bargain collectively, and engage in lawful strikes,” he said.
Amazon, however, downplayed the strike’s impact, asserting that holiday deliveries would continue through third-party drivers not involved in the protest.
The strike highlights growing labor tensions at one of the wealthiest corporations in the United States, with Filipino workers playing a vital role in advocating for fair treatment.
